The Smell Of Rain
I don't know exactly why there is such a pleasant smell right after the rain begins to fall to the earth, but it explains somewhat here. For convenience for the reader, here is the part from the link that was helpful to me in explaining the smell of rain. "Another after-the-rain smell comes from volatile oils that plants and trees release. The oil then collects on surfaces such as rocks. The rain reacts with the oil on the rocks and carries it as a gas through the air. This scent is like the bacteria spores in that most people consider it a pleasant, fresh smell. It has even been bottled and sold for its aromatic qualities!"
Now, I'd always heard something about 'negative ions' being released in the air. Can anyone tell me if I'm all wet (no pun intended) concerning this piece of info or is there a degree of truth in it?
We've just had a storm roll through and sounds like another is approaching. Unlike Oklahoma and Texas, we can still use some rainfall.
I sat out in my garage and watched the winds whip up the trees, and heard both the manmade fireworks going off as well as Mother Nature. My garage faces East so I'm protected from the rain blowing in on me as I watch. My garage is the next best thing to having a big 'ole front porch.

Enjoy the rain Susan! I can't smell it, unfortunately I"ve lost that lovely sense...but I can feel it, right before it pours.
We have now officially (at least in Guthrie) been two days with no rain! I was getting a bit use to it after 21 days of the stuff.
Hey, girl, I'm getting caught up on blogs and just writing in general. I am glad to be back on your site.
So, the smell is a gas? Wow, didn't know that.
This Okie is glad to be sending rain your way.
It not only smells nice, there is a different quality to the air regarding sound. I love to hear people talking after a good rainstorm and to hear tires splashing through puddles.
Glad to hear you Okies are getting a break. I guess none of you are standing in line to see Evan Almighty.
Hi, B! Thanks for your comment. I like that word, petrichor. Very cool. With it being in your interests list I can see where this post caught your attention. :-)
And even fog.
